Recent Events:

  • At our January General Meeting, members created small art projects as part of a test run for the community collage art project CAA facilitated for the City of Corona Black History Month celebration.

  • Lori Alarcon and Kathryn Duncan continue to teach the free youth art classes on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings under our grant from the Ruth and Joseph C. Reed Foundation for the Arts. These classes are open to all local kids age 12-18 and are completely free of charge, no strings attached!

  • On Feb. 3, CAA member-artist, Paula Purpura, taught an excellent jewelry making class where we learned how to create wire wrap prong settings for cabochons.

  • On February 15th, at the City of Corona Black History Month community celebration, Corona Art Association member-artists facilitated a community collage inspired by the work of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. The project was designed by Kathryn Duncan, who was assisted by board member Amelia Nieves, in applying the individual pieces of art that were made by guests of the event. Outside the Historic Civic Center auditorium, CAA volunteers including Lori Alarcon, Becky Floyd, Kim Mabon, Karen Runion, and Doris Osko (borrowed from WICC), greeted arrivals and encouraged them to create the art. The art was then taken inside the auditorium, where Kathryn and Amelia assembled the collage in front of audience at the foot of the stage while the panelists discussed "African Americans and the Arts". Afterward the artwork was displayed in the lobby, where guests were delighted to locate their contribution. The finished artwork will be used by the City to commemorate Black culture and history throughout the year.

At our February General Meeting, local crafter Joan Magur, taught us how to create hand stenciled tote bags using acrylic paint.

This month, Corona Art Association members, along with the Corona Rotary Club, and the student Interact and Art Clubs from Santiago High School, started painting this mural at the Corona Senior Center. Several CAA member-artists submitted proposals for the designs to enliven the walls of the center's nutrition room. The center's clientele chose a park-like scene created by Lori Alarcon.

  • Congratulations to CAA member-artist Chanyu"Crystal" Miao on the completion of your utility box art wrap on the corner of McKinley and Promenade (by the Applebee's). It feels like a very long time ago when the City announced the call for art for this project. Several CAA artists were selected. Hopefully, we will see the others soon!

Please enjoy these photos of some our youth art classes from February.
